Now that Twitter is becoming more and more popular and mainstream, we need to remember what it ultimately is: a public forum. Anyone can see your tweets, unless you chose your privacy setting as otherwise. A public profile is default. This isn’t Facebook, where you are connected only to your friends, family and others you decide to allow to enter into your world. With Twitter, anyone can see your Tweets, and they are searchable!
A prime example of watching what you tweet is the “Cisco Fatty” incident that occurred last week. After an interviewee was offered a job at Cisco, she shared this tweet with the world:
“Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.”
Of course, Cisco monitors Twitter and there goes that job offer! Check out this MSNBC article for an interview with the “Cisco Fatty” herself.
And don’t say no one warned you…
