Intelligence Report:Social Platforms

Think tank L2 recently published its first annual report about the significance of social platforms and their relationships to many of the world’s top “Prestige” brands.  You can download the entire report HERE and we recommend watching the teaser video below.  We’ve also included some of the standout stats as well…

Per the study, prestige brands find that

  • .25% of e-commerce customer acquisition has come from Facebook
    • .01% has come from Twitter
  • Meanwhile, acquisition from paid search is up 50%
    • Acquisition from email has increased nine-fold
  • Visual platforms, most notably Instagram, register 25 times the engagement of community-based platforms
  • There are more than 10 platforms with 100 Million+ users including:
    • Facebook
    • YouTube
    • Twitter
    • Google+
    • Sina Weibo (China)
    • Tumblr
    • Instagram
    • WeChat (China)
    • Line (Japan)
    • Kakao Talk (Korea)
  • The typical prestige brand is present on 7 social media platforms
    • Swarovski tops the list with presence on 15
  • Asia recently passed North America and Europe as the largest (aggregate) Facebook user base globally
    • Among prestige brands, APAC communities register double the engagement of their North American peers
  • Prestige communities in Latin America are the largest globally, averaging more than 700K fans.
  • The average prestige Instagram community is 100K+ and registers engagement 18X that of Facebook and 48X that of Twitter
    • Six brands, including Chanel, with more than 2.7 Million hashtag mentions, register 1 Million+ user uploaded photos referencing the brand on Instagram
  • Prestige brand communities have not scaled as fast on Pinterest, only 4 brands have more than 200K followers vs. 32 on Instagram
    • That said, linking / findability is more important on Pinterest with brands in the home and design space registering equivalent traffic referral to that of Facebook
  • In April 2013, Snapchat reports 150 Million photos were shared each day on the platform
